Charting the Future of Spirituality, Religion, and Mental Health: Translating Research to Practice.
The Global Summit on Spirituality, Religion & Mental Health will be a centralized opportunity for interdisciplinary and international engagement, discourse, collaboration, and strategy-building to chart the future of the psychology of religion and spirituality. Leading psychologists, psychiatrists, chaplains, faith leaders, and researchers will identify methodological innovations, explore emerging theoretical frameworks, and address critical challenges influencing the integration of spirituality and religion into the science and practice of mental health. These collaborations will inform and advance global initiatives aimed at promoting spiritually informed mental health care across diverse clinical and community settings. This gathering will be held in person at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School from May 14-15, 2026. Join this two-day event to shape the future of this expanding field.
Call for Submissions:
Proposals are invited for a poster, 25-minute presentation/lecture, or 50-minute panel discussion addressing research and clinical practice at the intersection of spirituality, religion, and mental health. The guiding theme of the Global Summit will be “Charting the Future of Spirituality, Religion, and Mental Health: Translating Research to Practice.” We welcome submissions in the following three categories:
Clinically relevant research
Empirical or theoretical studies are encouraged that explore the role of spiritual and/or religious variables in mental health, treatment processes, or patient outcomes. This includes research that advances the understanding of how spirituality and religion influence the etiology of mental disorders, informs the development of clinical interventions, or evaluates the effectiveness of spiritually integrated treatments across diverse populations and settings.
Clinical work informed by research
Submissions should highlight research-supported spiritual and/or religious interventions with demonstrated relevance to real-world clinical settings, including their implementation, adaptation, or outcomes in diverse treatment settings and populations. This includes but is not limited to work in psychology, chaplaincy, and faith leadership. Examples may include how clinicians integrate spiritual/religious frameworks into mental health treatment or how chaplains engage pastoral care and counseling in diverse settings.
Theoretical, philosophical and theological considerations
Submissions are invited for exceptional contributions that will fundamentally shape the frameworks and assumptions guiding work spirituality, religion, and mental health. This may involve examining dominant paradigms, proposing alternative models, or addressing tensions between scientific and spiritual worldviews.
